Every garden is rigorously judged by experts drawn from the fields of horticulture and design around the world. Judging takes place on Tuesday afternoon the day before the Show opens to the public.

Garden creators are required to submit a Statement of Intent for their display garden. Gardens are not judged against each other, rather they are judged on how well the garden achieved its Statement of Intent. Four levels of medals are given - Gold, Silver, Bronze or Crystal. In addition to these medals the following awards are distributed.

Founder's Cup – the most overall meritorious exhibit. This is the "best in show" award.
Ethel Moss People's Choice Award - favorite garden as voted by the show's attendees. Votes are counted on Saturday morning and the winner is announced Saturday afternoon.
Fred Palmer Award - garden voted the most accomplished by fellow Garden Creators. Votes are counted on Thursday evening and the winner announced Friday morning.
Pacific Horticulture Magazine Award - garden that best demonstrates the regional nature of garden design. Judged by Pacific Horticulture representatives.
Sunset's Western Living® Award - garden most filled with fresh, useful, achievable ideas that enhance outdoor living in the West. Judged by Sunset editors.
